I read this article in the Deseret News on Monday. It was all about the debate between disposable diapers and cloth diapers. It has definitely got me thinking.
When I was growing up, my Mom used cloth diapers on all my younger siblings up until the last two kids. Being the oldest child, I am no stranger to the work that cloth diapers can be. I remember changing one of my baby brother's cloth diapers and totally missing the cloth and poking him with the safety pin. I felt so horrible! Anyway, I'm sure that my mom used cloth diapers because they were inexpensive, but definitely more time consuming (with washing, etc.) which is why she changed to disposables with the 5th and 6th child. Who has time after that many kids; especially time to do more laundry?
So yesterday I was thinking about this a little bit more, and the benefits of cloth diapers seemed to outweigh the negative aspects of them. For one, it is a larger cost up front, but for sure it is less expensive than disposable. They are also good for the environment. Did you know that it can take up to 100 years for a diaper to fully break down in the landfill? That's crazy to me!
Another reason for cloth diapers is potty training. Do you ever wonder why our parents potty trained their kids so early? It's probably because of cloth diapers. The kids can feel when they are wet because the moisture isn't being pulled away from their body. Of course there is a negative to that aspect as well. The diapers have to be changed more often to prevent diaper rash.
Of course there are many, many negatives, but I keep thinking of more positives. If there were some disaster, I am not going to have 10 packages of disposable diapers just lying around, but if I had cloth diapers I would still be okay in that area. (Do you ever worry about that stuff, or am I crazy?)
Anyway, I brought this up with Eric and he told me "ABSOLUTELY NOT!" before I even finished my sentence. So, what are your opinions on this? I don't think I know anyone who uses cloth right now, but I think it's a growing trend. (Hopefully I didn't bore you to tears!) Give me your opinions.

I tried it with just buying a few cloth diapers for during the day. I lasted one week. I couldn't stand the extra laundry, or the smell. I wish you luck if you decide to try it. I somehow think if you are this interested in it, try it for a while. GOOD LUCK!
I think you're crazy!...but I think you should try it if you think it would be a good thing:) You know I will still love you either way, but I may not change my niece/nephew when they are poopy:)
I know I'm WAY too lazy and smell sensitive to ever use cloth diapers. I guess I'm also less environmentally conscious than you, because I would never even consider switching!
Basically, Eric has told me that I'm crazy and he won't do it. He thinks the next step for me is to live in Montana and grow my hair in a really long braid and wear long dresses and a bonnet. Oh, and own a small ranch. So, I'm not going to get cloth diapers. I want my husband to still love me. :)
Amber-Welcome back! Hope you're feeling well. I need to come visit you and the cute baby!
I used cloth on Lila and my family meaning younger brother and sisters had them. I was eleven when my mother past away. Use the disposal ones...they keep your kids dryer for a reason. Try handling bad diaper rash which is a constant fight with cloth diapers. In order to get them clean ones needs to use bleach...not good on a babies bum if your child has a reaction. Yea and try getting that crap out of a diaper sitting there rinsing in the toliet the diaper out (big turn off!!! Then if you forget one in the toliet waiting to come back and rinse it out well someone else gets there first and does their thing, then they by mistake flush it down the toliet it's then called plumber time!!!I believe in a lot of do it your self things, canning ect. but modern day baby diapers are a great invention. Please note I had two babies at home...just my thoughts!!!
hey brandi - i realize i'm not in kid mode yet so i haven't tested out the options - but i'm pretty sure that i'm going to do cloth diapers. it is just crazy to me to think of sending that waste into the landfills and that is takes SO long to break down. also i didn't know that about the potty training - that is interesting.
well wish me luck when kids do come. :) we'll see how it goes with cloth diapers.
have a great weekend!
I have thought a lot about using cloth diapers. I would consider doing it just at my house and if we were to go out we would switch to disposables. Like you said, it is terrible on the environment and also a lot more expensive to use disposables, but I still haven't made the switch. Mason is about ready to potty train anyways.
i asked jimmy and he looked at me in disgust and all he said was, "yuck!" obviously we don't have kids and i have no idea how to respond to this. but, should the time come, i am putting my kid on the toilet at 9 months and potty training them. you're probably laughing at me, but i am dead serious. my friend was potty trained that young, so i know it's possible! that way, disposable diapers for 9 months. w00t!
oh my... i can't believe you are even considering it. I love you for it. You truely are amazing. i would love you to do it and then blog all about it. I need more laughter in my life! good luck!
Ah, good luck with that. I'm sticking with disposable diapers!!!!! I'd have to agree with stressedkris. I haven't ever tried it but I am pretty sure I don't need more to manage than I already have.
