Wheeler Farm Fun

For Family Night Monday we went to Wheeler Farm. My kids were so excited! At 5pm they let you milk their two milk cows and they talk about the chores on the farm with the kids.

Hayden and Maya were in awe at the huge cows they brought in! Their faces were like this the entire time. Their two milk cows are named Laila and Gidget.

Hayden was seriously a natural. He just went up and knew what to do. He really enjoyed it, surprisingly. The big question at our house lately has been, "Mom, when are we getting a cow?" Um, not anytime soon...

I, however, was not a natural and I had to keep asking for a demonstration on how to do it. It just feels weird to be doing that to a cow. I was feeling real sympathy for Laila, there. I would not want to be producing milk for the rest of my life, that is for sure!

Maya with the piggies. The animals are so friendly and well taken care of. All except for the chickens. We had a great time watching them, but they are brutal to each other! Many of the chickens had all of their feathers torn off. It was interesting to watch, and actually, Eric was rather intrigued. Once one chicken was down, they all started pecking. It makes me never want to have more than the 5 chickens we have now.

Good ol' Wheeler Farm!

Foursday

Sunday, as we were getting ready for church, Hayden asked me, "Hey, mom-when is Foursday?"
"Huh? Foursday?"
Hayden replied, "Yeah, we have "Twos"day and "Thirds"day...when is "Fours"day?"

Meet my son, The Walking Info-mercial

A couple of Saturdays ago I was outside with Hayden, admiring our empty flower bed.
I said, "I really need to plant some flowers out here."
To which he replied, "Mom, you should get the flower roll. You roll it out, water it, and let nature take care of itself."
Well, he had me sold!

Just hours later, my sister, Brooke, was complaining that her feet hurt from her shoes. Hayden had just the thing.
"Brooke, you should get the air shoes. They have breathable holes in them and with every step a puff of air blows between your toes!"
I'm pretty sure that Brooke went and bought a pair of those that night. I know I thought about it!

Ironically, our Bishop asked us the next day to go on a "Media Fast" for one week. I didn't even hesitate. Our son obviously watches WAY too much TV! (But at least it's informative!)

The Diaper Debate

I read this article in the Deseret News on Monday. It was all about the debate between disposable diapers and cloth diapers. It has definitely got me thinking.

When I was growing up, my Mom used cloth diapers on all my younger siblings up until the last two kids. Being the oldest child, I am no stranger to the work that cloth diapers can be. I remember changing one of my baby brother's cloth diapers and totally missing the cloth and poking him with the safety pin. I felt so horrible! Anyway, I'm sure that my mom used cloth diapers because they were inexpensive, but definitely more time consuming (with washing, etc.) which is why she changed to disposables with the 5th and 6th child. Who has time after that many kids; especially time to do more laundry?

So yesterday I was thinking about this a little bit more, and the benefits of cloth diapers seemed to outweigh the negative aspects of them. For one, it is a larger cost up front, but for sure it is less expensive than disposable. They are also good for the environment. Did you know that it can take up to 100 years for a diaper to fully break down in the landfill? That's crazy to me!

Another reason for cloth diapers is potty training. Do you ever wonder why our parents potty trained their kids so early? It's probably because of cloth diapers. The kids can feel when they are wet because the moisture isn't being pulled away from their body. Of course there is a negative to that aspect as well. The diapers have to be changed more often to prevent diaper rash.

Of course there are many, many negatives, but I keep thinking of more positives. If there were some disaster, I am not going to have 10 packages of disposable diapers just lying around, but if I had cloth diapers I would still be okay in that area. (Do you ever worry about that stuff, or am I crazy?)

Anyway, I brought this up with Eric and he told me "ABSOLUTELY NOT!" before I even finished my sentence. So, what are your opinions on this? I don't think I know anyone who uses cloth right now, but I think it's a growing trend. (Hopefully I didn't bore you to tears!) Give me your opinions.
